The working rule is two thirds of the width of whatever sits below it. Measure the headboard, not the mattress.

• Over a queen, a headboard runs about 62 inches, so aim for 37 to 47 inches of art. One 60x90 cm / 24x36" piece lands in that range.
• Over a king, a headboard runs about 80 inches, so aim for 48 to 60 inches. One 70x100 cm / 28x40" piece is the single-piece answer.
• As a pair, two 40x50 cm / 16x20" prints hung with four to six inches between them cover a queen and read as deliberate. Two 45x60 cm / 18x24" prints do the same over a king.
