Wall Art Size Calculator

Choosing wall art size is the step most people get wrong: a piece that looked big online arrives and disappears on the wall. Interior designers solve it with one rule: art should span about two thirds to three quarters of the furniture beneath it. This calculator applies that rule to your exact furniture and matches the result to real print sizes.

How the two-thirds rule works

Art that spans 66 to 75 percent of the furniture below it reads as intentional and balanced. Narrower than that and the piece floats; wider and it crowds the room. For an empty wall, the same range applies to the wall section you want the art to own. Once you have your size, hang it right: over furniture, the bottom of the frame sits 6 to 10 inches above the furniture top; on an open wall, the center of the artwork sits at 57 inches from the floor. Our picture hanging height calculator gives you the exact nail position, and the true-to-scale size comparison shows every size next to a real sofa before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What size wall art should go above a sofa?

For a standard 84 inch sofa, the two-thirds rule points to art spanning roughly 56 to 63 inches. A single 28x40 inch piece works in larger rooms, and a set of two or three prints hung side by side fills the range beautifully. Browse gallery wall sets for ready-made pairings.

What size wall art should go above a bed?

Above a queen bed, aim for 40 to 45 inches of total width: one 24x36 inch piece hung horizontally, or a pair of 16x20 prints. Above a king bed, a 28x40 inch piece or a three-piece set fills the space well.

Is it better to go bigger or smaller?

When in doubt, go one size up. Undersized art is the most common decorating regret, and larger pieces anchor a room. Every Sparkycare design comes in 7 sizes from 5x7 to 28x40 inches with free shipping available, so you can match the size to your exact wall.
