Picture Hanging Height Calculator

Free Wall Art Tools · Hanging Height Calculator

Galleries and museums hang art with its center at 57 inches from the floor, average eye level. Most homes hang art too high. This calculator turns the gallery rule into one number: exactly how high to put the nail, accounting for your frame's height and its hanging hardware.

The picture hanging height formula

For an open wall: nail height = 57 in + (frame height ÷ 2) − hardware drop. That places the artwork's center at 57 inches while compensating for how far the frame hangs below its hook. Above furniture the formula becomes: nail height = furniture height + 8 in gap + frame height − hardware drop, which sets the frame bottom in the 6 to 10 inch band above the furniture. The calculator above runs both versions for you and shows the frame's top, bottom, and center so you can double-check with a tape measure.

The 57 inch rule: the nail goes at 57 in + (frame height ÷ 2) − hardware drop.

Why 57 inches?

The 57 inch standard puts the center of the artwork at average eye level, which is how galleries create that calm, deliberate feel. The common mistake is measuring to the top of the frame or to the hook without subtracting the hardware drop, which is why so much art ends up several inches too high. Above furniture, eye level gives way to a simpler rule: the bottom of the frame sits 6 to 10 inches above the furniture so the two read as one unit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for hanging pictures at the right height?

Nail height equals 57 inches plus half the frame height, minus the hanging hardware drop. For example, a 24 inch tall frame on a wire with a 3.5 inch drop: 57 + 12 − 3.5 = 65.5 inches from the floor to the nail.

How high should art hang above a sofa or bed?

Keep the bottom of the frame 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) above the furniture top. Closer to 6 inches ties the art and furniture together; more than 10 inches makes the piece float.

Does the hanging hardware really matter?

Yes. A wire hanger can drop the frame 3 inches or more below the nail, while a sawtooth drops it barely 1 inch. Skipping this step is the most common reason art hangs lower than planned.
