Picture Hanging Height Calculator
Galleries and museums hang art with its center at 57 inches from the floor, average eye level. Most homes hang art too high. This calculator turns the gallery rule into one number: exactly how high to put the nail, accounting for your frame's height and its hanging hardware.
Why 57 inches?
The 57 inch standard puts the center of the artwork at average eye level, which is how galleries create that calm, deliberate feel. The common mistake is measuring to the top of the frame or to the hook without subtracting the hardware drop, which is why so much art ends up several inches too high. Above furniture, eye level gives way to a simpler rule: the bottom of the frame sits 6 to 10 inches above the furniture so the two read as one unit.

Frequently asked questions
How high should I hang a picture on an empty wall?
Center the artwork at 57 inches (145 cm) from the floor. Nail height equals 57 inches plus half the frame height, minus the hardware drop. This calculator does that math for you.
How high should art hang above a sofa or bed?
Keep the bottom of the frame 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) above the furniture top. Closer to 6 inches ties the art and furniture together; more than 10 inches makes the piece float.
Does the hanging hardware really matter?
Yes. A wire hanger can drop the frame 3 inches or more below the nail, while a sawtooth drops it barely 1 inch. Skipping this step is the most common reason art hangs lower than planned.
